Bishop dahlia

A true classic and superb performer with deep bronzed foliage and bright red blooms.

Dahlias really are the stars of the summer, providing both style and substance to border and container displays and offer great value to boot. Over the last few years, we have seen renewed interest in these amazing plants and every summer, our trials garden becomes ablaze with colour for a long stretch and see’s us cutting armfuls of blooms for months.

At the end of the season tubers can either be lifted and stored or given a deep mulch to preserve them overwinter before starting again the following year. Half-hardy perennials, grow in full sun although they will tolerate some shade.

FAQs

Plant your Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff tubers outdoors from May to June. Prepare rich, well-drained soil in a sunny spot and plant with the growing points (“eyes”) facing upwards. You can also plant tubers indoors from March, in pots filled with multipurpose compost, before transferring them to their final position once the weather warms. For potted dahlia plants, grow on indoors before hardening off and planting out after the risk of frost has passed.

Bishop of Llandaff dahlia tubers should be planted around 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep in the soil, with the eyes of the tubers just below the surface. Space the tubers approximately 60 cm (24 inches) apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth. Consider placing plant supports or hazel staking around the planted tubers. This will allow the Dahlias to grow up through the supports and hold their flower stems upright through the growing season.

Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff requires at least 6-8 hours of direct light per day. Dahlias prefer fertile, well-drained soil that is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season encourages healthy blooms. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
