FAQs

Plant Knautia macedonica in well-drained soil and a sunny position for the best flowering display. It prefers moderately fertile soil but will tolerate poorer conditions as long as drainage is good. Space plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart to allow room for their airy, branching habit. Supporting taller stems may be necessary in exposed spots, or parts of the country with strong winds.

Yes, deadheading Knautia macedonica keeps it looking tidy and extends its flowering season from mid-summer into early autumn. To deadhead, cut back individual faded flower stems to a healthy pair of leaves. If the plant becomes untidy later in the season, a light trim can promote fresh growth and a final flush of flowers before autumn. If you don’t deadhead, the seed heads may self-seed in suitable conditions, growing new plants the following year.

Yes, Knautia macedonica can benefit from being divided. If clumps become congested or growth starts to decline, lift and divide the plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Use a sharp spade or knife to separate the plant into smaller sections, leaving each part of the divided root ball with a good amount of healthy roots. Replant immediately at the same depth, firming in well and watering thoroughly.
