FAQs

Divide Libertia grandiflora in early spring or autumn when the soil is still warm but not too dry. Lift the clump carefully using a garden fork, keeping as much of the root system intact as possible for best results. Gently pull apart the rhizomes, giving each section a good amount of roots and foliage. Then, replant the clumps immediately and water to settle the soil around the roots.

Libertia grandiflora spreads gradually through rhizomes, forming dense clumps over time. While not considered invasive in most gardens, it can self-seed and spread more vigorously in mild, sheltered areas. Regularly deadheading spent flowers can help control the plant’s growth; failing that, division can keep it in check instead.

Libertia grandiflora grows well in containers, provided they are deep enough to accommodate its roots. Choose a pot at least 30 cm wide with suitable drainage holes. Use a free-draining compost mix, such as a blend of loam-based compost and horticultural grit. Place the container in full sun or light shade, water regularly, allowing the compost to dry slightly between waterings, and feed with fertiliser in spring. Over time, the plant may outgrow its pot, so divide and repot it every few years to keep it in top condition.
