Blue Delight

I was delighted to receive my Perovskia Blue Spire recently. It is settling down well after being planted and I look forward to it flowering.

FAQs

Plant Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ in well-drained soil and a sunny position, as it prefers dry conditions with poor to moderately fertile soil. Water  regularly until plants are established, then reduce watering as Perovskia is highly drought-tolerant; once settled in, it requires minimal maintenance. For best results, plant in spring when the soil is warm, giving roots time to establish before the heat of the summer.. Perovskia does not need to be fertilised

In spring, prune Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ by cutting back the previous year’s growth to around 30cm from the ground. This encourages strong, fresh shoots and prevents the plants from becoming woody and leggy. Use sharp secateurs to make clean cuts just above healthy buds. If left unpruned, its stems may become untidy and produce fewer flowers. Remove dead or damaged stems to keep the plant at its best.

The best time to prune Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ is in early spring, just as new growth emerges. Avoid cutting back in autumn, as the woody stems provide winter structure and protection from frost. If necessary, tidy plants lightly after flowering, but leave major pruning until spring. Regular annual pruning keeps plants compact, prevents legginess, and improves flowering.
