Knowing which bulbs to plant in summer and when to plant them can transform your garden with bold colour from July right through to the first frosts. From the drama of dahlias to the elegant spires of gladioli, there are plenty of summer bulbs to plant for every style of garden. This guide covers everything you need to know, from timing and planting depth to the top varieties to grow. Browse our full range of summer-flowering bulbs to get started.
The golden rule for planting summer bulbs is to wait until after the last frost date. For most of the country, which means from mid-April to May. Gardeners in the south can often start a little earlier; those in Scotland or exposed northern areas should hold off until late May. Soil temperature matters too, so make sure you aim for a consistent 10°C or above before planting tender varieties outdoors.
Here is our quick reference guide for when to plant summer bulbs by variety:
· Dahlias: Plant your tubers from late April or under cover from March for an early start
· Gladioli: Plant corms from April to June and stagger for succession planting every two to three weeks to keep getting flowers in autumn
· Lilies: Can be planted from April through to early summer
· Nerines: Plant your bulbs in summer (July–August) for September to November flowers
· Begonias: Start your tubers indoors from February–March; plant out after frosts, typically May
Knowing how to plant summer bulbs correctly makes all the difference. Get the depth, soil, and drainage right, and your bulbs will have everything they need to thrive into a riot of colour throughout the season.
Planting depth: The rule of thumb is to plant at a depth of two to three times the height of the bulb. Here’s a quick guide:
• Dahlias: Plant tubers 10–15cm deep
• Gladioli: Plant corms 10–15cm deep
• Lilies: Plant bulbs 15–20cm deep (three times the bulb height)
• Begonias: Plant tubers 5–7cm deep, hollow-side up
Soil and drainage: Summer bulbs need well-drained soil to prevent rotting in your beds or containers. On heavy clay soil, dig in compost before planting, and add horticultural grit directly beneath and around bulbs, especially if you are planting dahlias and gladioli.
Tender vs. Hardy Bulbs: This is worth knowing the difference, as it affects winter care, so here is a simple breakdown:
• Hardy bulbs (e.g. some lilies) can stay in the ground over winter in mild areas.
• Tender bulbs (e.g. dahlias, gladioli, begonias) must be lifted after the first frosts and stored frost-free indoors until spring.
Can I plant spring and summer bulbs together? It’s one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer is not at the same time, but you can absolutely use the same bed. Spring bulbs are planted in autumn; summer bulbs go in during spring, making them perfect partners for a beautiful extended display.
A brilliant technique is lasagne bulb planting, which is layering spring bulbs (like tulips) deep at the bottom of your pot, adding compost, then planting summer bulbs like begonias or dahlias on top. Each layer emerges in turn for months of non-stop colour from a single container or bed. In borders, simply fill the gaps left by fading spring bulbs as the weather warms; by the time your tulips have finished, your dahlias will be ready to take over.
Not sure which summer bulbs to plant this year? Here are some of the best summer-flowering bulbs from our collection, along with what makes each one special.
Dahlias are the queens of the late summer garden, available in so many colours and shapes from pompons, daisy-like blooms to dinner-plate marvels. They bloom prolifically from July to the first frosts, and the more you cut them, the more they flower.
These tall, statuesque spikes studded with ruffled blooms make gladioli a dramatic choice for the back of borders for height and drama and cut flower arrangements. Plant in succession from April to June for a continuous display through to September.
Among the most elegant and fragrant of all summer bulbs, lilies are superb in pots, sunny borders, and as cut flowers. Oriental varieties offer a heady scent, whilst Asiatic types deliver bold colour and are easier to grow.
Tuberous begonias are ideal for containers, hanging baskets, and shadier spots. Their luscious flowers in rich jewel tones bloom continuously from June to the frosts. Start tubers indoors in late winter for the longest display.
Plant nerine bulbs in summer for a spectacular finale when most other flowers have faded. These South African natives produce exotic clusters of lily-shaped blooms with petals that curl playfully at the edges, in vibrant pinks or pure white. Flowering from September through November, they are among the last bulbs to bloom before winter, and they return stronger every year.
Summer bulbs are one of the easiest ways to add bold, reliable colour to your garden. With the right timing, a sunny spot, and decent drainage, they will reward you with a spectacular display from midsummer right through to autumn.
