Do you have a particular vision in mind for your arrangements? Then why overlook the aesthetic potential of pots and containers in your garden? Your choice of pot can massively enhance the vibrancy of your blooms, making their colour truly pop and contributing to the overall palette of your outside space - so choose wisely.
You do, of course, have to also consider the size and depth of your pots. Chrysanthemums tend to only grow relatively short roots, which is why they’re so perfect for potting. We recommend that our young flower plants are potted into 9cm (3½in) pots using a good quality, multi-purpose, peat-free compost.
Each cultivar has different characteristics - some may be tall and thin, others short and thick, but each will give good results in your pots if handled correctly.
Once potted, water your chrysanthemums in to encourage growth. Generally speaking, you should avoid overwatering your chrysanthemums and wait until the soil is almost completely dried out before watering again.
While the roots develop, you should keep your chrysanthemums out of direct sun for the first few days. Past this point, however, they will take as much sun as you can give them. Move your pots into a well-lit area with plenty of warmth.
Your young plants will have sufficient food in the compost for three to four weeks, so we wouldn’t recommend any extra feeding before this stage.
