While it can spread quickly in the right conditions, Galium odoratum is not generally considered invasive in the UK. It spreads through underground rhizomes, which is what makes it an effective ground cover perennial but is not particularly difficult to contain. Lifting and dividing annually or planting in defined spaces can help manage its growth, and it’s easy to remove if it spreads to an undesired location.

Galium odoratum, or sweet woodruff, prefers moist, well-drained soil. It grows well in a variety of conditions, but is especially well-suited to the woodland garden – it thrives in full or partly shaded areas, such as underneath shrubs and trees or in shady borders. As it only reaches 20cm in height, it’s a great option for filling gaps as ground cover or pairing with taller plants for vertical contrast.
