Product Details

Lychnis flos-cuculi, or Ragged Robin, is a delicate-looking but resilient perennial plant with finely fringed, pink flowers that bloom from late spring into summer. Its slender stems and airy appearance make it a natural fit for wildflower meadows, damp borders, and pond edges, where it grows strongly in moisture-retentive soil.

A favourite of pollinators, these low-maintenance, bee-attracting plants work well as cut flowers. Plant Ragged Robin in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade for the best results. It contrasts beautifully with plants with yellow flowers or foxglove plants for a cottage garden feel.

Despite its delicate appearance, the Ragged Robin holds up well in cut arrangements. Its wispy stems and intricate petals work well alongside more structured and rigid flowers. To help the Ragged Robin last longer, trim the stems at an angle and remove lower leaves before arranging.

FAQs

Sow ragged Ragged Robin in autumn or spring in moist, well-drained soil. Scatter its seeds thinly on the soil's surface and press them lightly without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently damp but not waterlogged. Germination can take a few weeks, especially in cooler weather. Once established, Ragged Robin requires little maintenance.

Ragged Robin is not considered invasive, but it does self-seed freely in the right conditions. This makes it well-suited to wildflower meadows, pond edges, and damp borders where naturalised planting is encouraged. It can spread beyond its original planting area if left unmanaged, though it does not aggressively outcompete other plants. To control its spread, deadhead spent flowers before they go to seed.

Yes! Ragged Robin is a perennial, meaning it will return year after year. It dies back in winter before regrowing in spring, producing fresh green foliage followed by its signature pink, fringed flowers. In mild winters, some basal leaves may remain, but the plant will fully regrow once temperatures rise. Over time, clumps may expand, and plants can be divided in early spring if needed.
