Product Details

Salvia ‘Amistad’ is a striking, long-flowering perennial plant with deep purple blooms and rich green foliage. Its elegant tubular flowers, held on dark stems, appear from early summer until the first frosts, adding long-lasting colour and structure to your garden.

These butterfly- and bee-friendly plants make an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. It does best in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil, where its upright habit creates a dramatic focal point. Pair these flower plants with Verbena for a naturalistic look, silver-foliage plants for contrast, or plants with pink flowers for a softer balance.

Salvia ‘Amistad’ also works well as a cut flower, adding rich colour and height to arrangements. Cut its stems when the flowers have just opened, and place them in water straight away. Strip the lower leaves and trim the stems at an angle before arranging.

FAQs

Salvia ‘Amistad’ is half-hardy, meaning it can survive mild UK winters but may struggle in colder parts of the country. It will often return each year in warmer areas if planted in well-drained soil. In more frost-prone places, apply a thick mulch in autumn to protect the roots of outdoor Salvias, or move container-grown plants to a sheltered spot. Alternatively, take cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors if you prefer.

Cut back your Salvia ‘Amistad’ in spring once new growth appears at its base. Leaving the stems over winter provides frost protection for the base of the plant, as well as a habitat for wildlife. If you are overwintering your Salvias in pots, wait until spring before pruning them. You can also lift and divide larger your Salvia clumps in Spring.

Yes! Salvia ‘Amistad’ grows well in large pots with good drainage. Use a loam-based compost mixed with horticultural grit to improve drainage for your flower plants. Position them in full sun and water them regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Feed them once a fortnight with a liquid fertiliser during summer for best results, and in winter, move the pots to a sheltered spot or insulate them with fleece to protect their roots.
