Product Details

Choose Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris) for effortless colour and ground cover. With low-growing foliage and beautiful purple flowers, these perennial plants spread gently through borders, wildflower patches and lawns, creating a natural, informal look.

Flowering from late spring to early autumn, Self Heal does well in sun or partial shade and adapts to various soil types, making it a good choice if little else will grow in your garden. It requires hardly any maintenance, fills gaps between paving or larger plants with ease, and even tolerates light foot traffic. For a well-balanced planting scheme, combine Self Heal with other wildflower plants for a classic meadow feel, or other perennials for ground cover for additional colour contrast.

Self Heal holds its colour well in a vase and can be dried for longer-lasting displays. Its rich purple flowers contrast against softer shades and work beautifully in relaxed, garden-inspired bouquets. Trim stems at an angle and change the water regularly for best results.

FAQs

Self Heal is often considered a wildflower rather than a weed. It spreads naturally through lawns, borders, and meadows, but it is not invasive and is easy to manage. In garden settings, it provides attractive ground cover by spreading easily. While it can self-seed, regular mowing or deadheading helps control its spread.

Self Heal is best used for filling gaps in borders, naturalising in wildflower meadows, or softening edges around paving. It grows well in mixed plantings with daisies and chamomile, creating a relaxed, cottage-style look. As a low-maintenance ground cover, it helps suppress weeds and requires little care beyond occasional trimming. Being a plant that attracts butterflies, Self Heal makes a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Yes, Self Heal is a short-lived perennial, meaning it returns each year but may need replenishing over time. It spreads by creeping stems, gradually forming a dense, low-growing carpet. In colder areas, it may die back in winter before regrowing in spring.
