FAQs

Yes! Verbena Rigida is a short-lived perennial flower in mild climates, returning each year when winters are not too harsh. It can establish a strong root system that helps it survive over the winter. It may struggle to get through harsh frosts in colder areas, but applying a dry mulch in autumn can help protect the crown. If conditions are severe, treat it as an annual or take cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors.

Verbena rigida pairs well with plants that grow well in similar dry, sunny conditions. For a warm contrast, combine it with Rudbeckia, which flowers at the same time. Or, in a Mediterranean-style garden, mix it with Perovskia for a blend of purple and blue tones. It also works well with wildflowers, where its natural weaving habit shines in an informal planting scheme.

Verbena rigida often self-seeds, particularly in free-draining soil and warmer conditions. In colder areas, seedlings may not appear until spring when temperatures start to rise. If you prefer to control where it grows, collect the seeds in late autumn and sow them indoors in early spring.
