Product Details

Few plants add as much late-season colour as Verbena Rigida. Its compact habit and clusters of purple flowers make it an excellent choice for borders, prairie-style planting, and wildlife-friendly gardens. Blooming from midsummer into autumn, these bee-friendly plants provide a much-needed nectar source for bees and butterflies as the summer starts to fade into the cooler seasons.

Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, Verbena Rigida grows well in full sun and well-drained soil, returning each year in mild winters. Its slender stems allow it to weave between other plants, creating a relaxed, natural look that suits cottage gardens and modern planting schemes alike. For a pollinator-friendly display, combine Verbena rigida with more plants with purple flowers, lavender plants for a Mediterranean feel, or wildflower plants for a more informal setting.

Verbena rigida’s wiry stems and clustered flowers give it a natural, effortless feel, perfect for relaxed, garden-style bouquets. It blends beautifully with wildflowers and soft perennials, adding height without overpowering the arrangement. Cut early in the morning, and remove the lower leaves before placing them in water.

FAQs

Yes! Verbena Rigida is a short-lived perennial flower in mild climates, returning each year when winters are not too harsh. It can establish a strong root system that helps it survive over the winter. It may struggle to get through harsh frosts in colder areas, but applying a dry mulch in autumn can help protect the crown. If conditions are severe, treat it as an annual or take cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors.

Verbena rigida pairs well with plants that grow well in similar dry, sunny conditions. For a warm contrast, combine it with Rudbeckia, which flowers at the same time. Or, in a Mediterranean-style garden, mix it with Perovskia for a blend of purple and blue tones. It also works well with wildflowers, where its natural weaving habit shines in an informal planting scheme.

Verbena rigida often self-seeds, particularly in free-draining soil and warmer conditions. In colder areas, seedlings may not appear until spring when temperatures start to rise. If you prefer to control where it grows, collect the seeds in late autumn and sow them indoors in early spring.
