If buying pre-grown flowering plants, the best time to plant Japanese anemones in the UK is in early autumn or spring, when the ground is warm and moist. In autumn, plant them 4-6 weeks before the first frost to give them enough time to establish. In spring, plant once the risk of frost has passed and the soil is workable. Though they are frost-hardy, it’s best to harden young plants off before planting out.

The Japanese anemone, including the Anemone x hybrida Honorine Jobert, can be cut back in late autumn after flowering has finished and the foliage begins to die back.
