Sow Hollyhock seeds indoors in April or May for best results. They should be hardened off before planting in their final location. As biennials, they usually flower in their second year, spending their first year producing strong roots and leaves.
It is possible to grow Hollyhocks from scattered seeds into a pre-prepared seed bed in autumn; however, we recommend that for the best results, you sow indoors. This will ensure optimum germination, allowing you to plant them out when they’re big enough.
While Hollyhocks are hardy, they are a short-lived plant and should be treated either as biennials or short-lived perennials. They will therefore need to be sown regularly to ensure continuous displays year after year.
