Sow Sweet Pea Cupani seeds in winter for strong growth and early flowers. Sweet peas are cool-weather plants, so sowing them between October and February will yield the best results. Use deep root trainers or deep pots and sow up to three seeds in a pot in small clumps. When they are around six inches tall, pinch off the topmost leaves to encourage branching. Plant out in early spring and ensure they have a trellis or archway to grow up.
No, most sweet peas are annuals, though varieties of Ever-lasting sweet peas (Lathyrus latifolius) will return year after year. However, most sweet peas will die off after flowering. Make sure to regularly pick the flowers and remove any seed pods to prolong their flowering period.
As deep-rooted, hungry plants, sweet peas need a large, deep container to grow. Ensure that it is filled with rich, moist compost with good drainage and keep it well-watered but not soggy.
