FAQs

Sweet peas are called hardy annuals, which means they only live for one growing season, but they are relatively resilient and will survive cold temperatures. They’ll even tolerate a light frost, although if they’re sat in saturated or frozen compost, they’ll likely die. This is why we grow sweet peas in an unheated greenhouse or coldframe, and can get in an early sowing in autumn. If you don’t have a greenhouse or coldframe and are growing your sweet peas outside, be sure to have some garden fleece or bubble wrap ready to throw over them if frost is forecast. Take a look at our crop protection range if you need to order some.

Sow either in autumn - from October to November - and keep them in an unheated greenhouse or under a coldframe. Don’t be tempted to put them indoors over winter, or they’ll grow too fast and become ‘leggy’. Alternatively, you can sow them in early spring, from March to April. An autumn sowing simply means you’ll get the first sweet pea flowers earlier, but spring-sown seeds will quickly catch up, so don’t worry if you miss the autumn sowing window.

Sow your sweet pea seeds into a cell seed tray or root trainer tray, with two seeds per cell. Bury the seeds around 1cm deep - there’s no need to soak or scratch the surface of the seeds. Water and place them in a bright, cool spot. You can leave them outdoors if you don’t have a coldframe or greenhouse, but you will need to protect them from mice and frost.

When the seedlings reach about 10cm tall, snip off the top few sets of leaves to encourage them to bush out, and plant them into their final growing position in the garden around mid-spring, after the final frost.

The plants will need supports to grow up - this can be canes, trellis, an arch, or even string tacked onto a fence. You might need to tie in the sweet peas until they develop their own self-clinging tendrils.
