FAQs

You don’t have to pinch your sweet peas - they’ll happily grow and flower without a pinch - but the reason we recommend a pinch is to encourage the plant to bush out and produce more flowers, rather than one long stem with fewer flowers on it.

When your plantlets are around 10cm tall, simply take a clean pair of snips, scissors, or secateurs and snip off the growing tip just above the second or third set of leaves.

The most common causes of tall, spindly sweet peas are too much heat and/or not enough light. If yours have got a bit leggy, move them to a cool, bright location. An unheated greenhouse or coldframe is perfect, or outdoors with some fleece ready to throw over them in case of frost. To reduce the height of leggy sweet peas, it’s a good idea to pinch them - just follow the FAQ above.

If your seedlings are very tall, with a flimsy stem stretching from the soil to the first set of flowers, it might be worth starting afresh and sowing another batch of seeds. As long as you sow them before May, your seeds should have enough time to germinate, grow and flower. Alternatively, you can buy ready-to-plant sweet pea plants or plugs.

It’s best to sow your sweet pea seeds in trays, modules or pots, so you can protect them from hungry mice and shrews, which love to dig up and eat sweet pea seeds. Sow your seeds into peat-free compost and give them a good watering. You shouldn't need to water them again until you see their first green leaves.

Once the risk of frost has passed, around April to May, you should be able to plant your seedlings out into their final growing position. Choose somewhere bright and sunny. You can grow them in deep pots and containers, raised beds, allotment beds, or directly into borders. Our tip is to put in your supports straight away, before the plants need them.
